Raynier was born about 1075 in Montferrat, Italy.1   Raynier's father was Marquis William de Montferrat and his mother was Otta d'Aglie.  His paternal grandparents were Marquis Otto de Montferrat II and <Unknown>.  He was an only child.  He died in 1133.2

Raynier and Gisela were married after 1103.1   They had a son and two daughters, named Guillaume, Jeanne and Matilda.
