Hervey was born about 1130 in West Dereham, Norfolk, England.¹ Hervey's father was Harvey Walter and his mother was <Unknown>. His paternal grandparents were Hervey Walter and <Unknown>. He had a sister named Alicia.

General Notes
- Hervius Walter, sometimes called Henry, continued the name of Walter, as did his descendants down to Edmond, Earl of Carrick. Edmond dropped the surname because with his title of Earl the Christian name only was to be used with the title. He married Maud, eldest daughter of Theobald de Valoins, and had 5 sons: Theobald, the first Butler of Ireland, Hubert, Walter, Roger and Hamon.
