Joseph Ray was born on March 26th, 1939 in Taylor County, Kentucky. Joseph Ray's father was Bennie R. Underwood and his mother was Elsie Agnes Underwood. His paternal grandparents were George I. Underwood and Nannie J. ???. He had a brother and two sisters, named James Jack, Mona M. and Lovie T.. He was the youngest of the four children. Joseph Ray Underwood, 49, 315 North Columbia Ave., Campbellsville, died Thursday, Nov. 3, 1988, at the Markey Cancer Center in Lexington after a short illness. He was the son of Elsie Underwood, who survives, and the late Bennie Underwood. He was an employee of the Lyon-DeWitt Funeral Home and was a member of the Poplar Grove United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father in 1984 and a brother, Jack Underwood, in 1971. He is survived by one son and one daughter, Scotty Underwood, Campbellsville, and Carla Jo Morgan, Lebanon; two brothers and four sisters, Garland Underwood, Elizabethtown, Mona Brewer and Lovie Brewer, both of Campbellsville, and Franklin Hiestand Underwood, Essie Vance, and Connie Caulk, all of Buffalo; several other relatives and friends. The funeral was at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, at the Poplar Grove United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Elbert Hadley and the Rev. Lester Carter officiated. Lyon-DeWitt Fu!
