Richard was born on November 20th, 1819 in Bedford Co., Virginia.1   Richard's father was Henry D. Powell and his mother was <Unknown>.  He was an only child.  He died at the age of 57 on November 6th, 1877 in Cap Anderson.1

Richard and Mary were married in a religious ceremony on December 21st, 1848 in Meade Co., Kentucky.1   They had two sons and two daughters, named Henry, John, Sarah and Nancy.
