Joanna was born in 1760 in Frederick Co., Maryland.1  Joanna's father was Thomas Payne and her mother was <Unknown>.  Her paternal grandparents were Flayl Payne and <Unknown>. She had a brother and four sisters, named Flayl, Sarah, Elizabeth, Martha and Mary. She had an adopted brother named John.  She died at the age of 75 in 1835 in Breckenridge Co., Kentucky.

Joanna and William were married in a religious ceremony on August 16th, 1781 in Bedford Co., Virginia.  They had three sons and six daughters, named Thomas, John, Jubal, Nancy, Elizabeth, Joanna, Zilpa, Letha and Mary.
