John was born about 1844 in , Hamilton County, Tennessee, USA.1 John's father was Wilson Hixson and his mother was Nancy Hughes. His maternal grandparents were John Hughes and Jane Skyles. He had three brothers and three sisters, named George Washington, Samuel, Ephraim Franklin, Rebecca, Elizabeth and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the seven children.-
