Gilbert was born about 1131 in Pembroke, Pembrokeshire, Wales.¹ Gilbert's father was John (The Marshal) Fitzgilbert and his mother was Aline Pipard. His paternal grandparents were Gilbert le Mareschal and Marguerite de Venuz. He had a brother named Walter. He was the older of the two children.
