Pauson was born in 1844 in Orange Co, NC.1   Pauson's father was John S. Roberts and her mother was Winnifred Roberts.  Her maternal grandparents were William Roberts and Lucy Jane Umstead. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Jesse V., Gaston, Winnifred, Saluda A. and Louisa.  She was the second youngest of the six children.1
