Dirk was born about 1255 in Slot Brederode, Santpoort, Noord Holland, Netherlands.1   Dirk's father was Floris van Brederode and his mother was <Unknown>.  His paternal grandparents were Dirk Drossard Heer van Brederode and Alverade van Heusden. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Jan, Floris, van de Doortoge and Badeloge.  He was the oldest of the five children.  He died before January 28th, 1306.1
