Ludwig, known as der Heilge, was born on October 28th, 1200 in Wartburg Bei Eisenach, Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach, Thuringia.1   Der Heilge's father was Landgrave Hermann of Thuringia I and his mother was Countess Sofie of Sommerschenburg.  His maternal grandparents were Count Palatine Friedrich of Sommerschenburg and <Unknown>. He had four sisters named Jutte, Hedwig, Irmgard and Agnes.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
