Simon was born before 1088.1   Simon's father was Thierry (The Brave) of Upper Lorraine II and his mother was Countess Hedwig of Formbach.  His paternal grandparents were Duke Gerard of Upper Lorraine and Hedwige de Namur. He had a sister named Petronille.  He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Thierry and Gisela.  He died in 1139.2
