James was born in 1220 in Shirley, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England.1   James' father was Sewallis de Shirley and his mother was Isabell Meysnyll. He had two sisters named Elizabeth and Isabel.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 58 in 1278 in Shirley, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England.1
