John was born about 1069 in Berkeley, Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England.1   John's father was Roger de Berkeley I and his mother was Rissa de Dursley.  His paternal grandparents were William De Berkeley and <Unknown>. He had four brothers and a sister, named Roger, Eustace, William, Alexander and Livida.  He was the oldest of the six children.
