Susannah's father was Richard Thomas Skaggs and her mother was Mary Thear. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Bussell Skaggs and Ann Wollard. She had four brothers named Aaron, Richard, James and Thomas. She was the fourth oldest of the five children.
