THE BLODGETT FAMILY/N.Y.-ILLINOIS

Phoebe Blodgett was the wife og George Nash, and married him when he was a resident of McHenry County, Illinois. It is now clear that her family was from New York and lived just across the county line in Leroy Township in Boone County, Illinois. This is meant to record any information I can find on her family and ancestry.

PHOEBE BLODGETT -- our ancestor and the wife of George. According to family records, she was born on September 11, 1836 and died April 23, 1897. They had eight children -- six of which lived to adulthood and all of whom were born in Illinois -- Ida May [1865], Orley Andy* [1858], Orson Blodgett
[1860], Ella Joana [1864], Elmer James [1865], Charles Schuyler [1868 and died in 1870],Mary Fidelia [1870], and Climena Annette [1873 and died in 1882]. * Ange

Phoebe is shown in the 1860 census as living in McHenry County in a rather large Nash household: Charles [42, b. New York], Hannah[37, N. Y.], Sanford [8, Illinois], Sidney [40, laborer, New York], Caroline [24?, New York], Monroe [7, Illinois], John [5,Illinois], Amelia [2, Illinois], and Sidney 3 mos [census taken July 11, 1860], George [24, New York], Phebe [22, New York], Ida [4, Illinois], Orlo [2,Illinois], Orson 4 mos, Illinois, and Cynthia [65, Massachusetts].

In the 1870 census, they are shown in a large Nash constellation that included: George, a farmer [with land and property valued at $2000 and $700], age 35 and born in New York, Phobe, age 33 "keeping house" and born in New York, and seven children, all born in Illinois: Ida M., 13, Orla A., 11, Orson D., 10[the oldest three all having "attended school in the last year"] Ella J., 6, Elmer J.,4, Charles, 2, and Mary, four months{born in March]. The Sidney Nash family also lived with them, which is significant because Caroline was a Phoebe relative and their children had some names common to Squire Blodgett's immediate family -- Celestia and Squire, for two.

She is shown in the 1880 census in Chemung Township, McHenry County, Illinois with George M. Nash {age 46, born in New York State], as having been born in New York State, age 44. They were shown with Ida [22], Orley A. [21], Orson [19], Ella [17], James [14], Mary [10], and Nettie [7], all shown as born in Illinois.

George was shown as a farmer,Phoebe as 'keeping house", Ida and Orley as "housekeeper", and Orson as "laborer". Ella, James, and Mary were shown as "at school". All the kids were shown as having both parents born in New York. George was shown as having his father born in Vermont and his mother in Rhode Island. Both of Phoebe's parents were shown as having been born in New York.

In the Charles Nash Genealogy, it mentions that the George Nash family was "very close to the Sidney Nash family, since Phoebe, George's wife, was a niece of Caroline, Sidney's wife, and they all grew up together in the White Oaks community near Chemung.

In the addenda to the Sylvestor Nash Genealogy, her name is spelled "Phebe". It is also spelled that way in the 1860 census, but these are the only places I have seen it so.

ESTHER C. BLODGETT -- In Jo Nash Ofstedahl's birthday book, there is a birthday listed for Esther C. Blodgett. It is likely that it is a relative of Phoebe's. However there is no established relationship or identifying information. The birthday is September 1, 1849.

OTHER MCHENRY/BOONE COUNTY BLODGETTS
SQUIRE S. BLODGETT -- Phoebe's father. He is shown in the 1850 census in LeRoy township in Boone County, as being 34 [born about 1816], and born in New York. Also listed are his wife Joanna, 34, Phebe 14, Caroline 11, and Squire R., 9. All of these are listed as having been born in New York. Then Hensey F. [sp.], 5, and Climena, 2, are shown as having been born in Illinois. This means that they emigrated from New York to Illinois between 1841 and 1845.

In the 1860 census in Boone County, LeRoy township, he is shown as S. S. Blodgett, 43, born in New York and living with Joanna, 43 and also born in New York. Their children are Caroline [21], Squire [with the middle name of Ruppell?, 18], Fedelia, [14], Clemina, [12], Hepsiah [8], and Ella [2] -- all shown as having been born in New York [ this is clearly an error, as the younger children were born in Illinois]. The significance of the middle name Ruppell with Squire is that is a possibility for Joanna's family name.

In the 1870 census, Squire is shown as a farmer aged 52, with land and property valued at $7600 and $2100 respectively, with Joanna, 52 and "keeping house", Squire, 28, "farm help" -- all born in New York -- and Fidelia, 24, and a teacher, Hipsy [?] 18 and "at home", and Herman,17 and "farm help" -- the latter all being born in Illinois {except Herman, who os shown as having been born in New York].

JAMES S. BLODGETT -- shown in the 1850 census next to Squire Blodgett as a 27 year old farmer born in New York, married to Hensy [Hersy?] F., age 22 and born in New York, with two children, Orlando S., 2, and Andrew F., one month [censy\us taken on September 18, 1850], both children born in Illinois.

He is shown on the next page from S. S. Blodgett in the 1860 census in Boone County, age 37 and born in New York, married to Hersy, age 32 and born in New York, with five children all born in Illinois: Orlando S., 12, Andrew J., 10, Hudson D., 8, Eddy M., 1, and Olive, three months [taken on July 18, 1860].

In the 1870 census he is shown as a 47 year old farmer [$1700 and $6000] born in New York , with Hannah, 42 and born in New York, and children all born in New York: Orlando, 21, "farm help", Andrew, 20, "teacher", Hudson, 18, "farm help", Eva, 11, and Arthur, one month.

RUSSELL T. BLODGETT -- shown four pages after S.S. Blodgett in the 1860 Boone County census as R. T. Blodgett, age 42, a farmer born in New York, with Margaret, age 30 and born in New York, with five children [the oldest two born in New York and the other three born in Illinois]: Helen, 12, Sullivan [Sulman?] , 12, H. J., [boy] 9, Franklin, 6, and Wesley,2.

In the 1870 census, he is shown in LeRoy township as a farmer age 52, born in New York, with Margaret, age 42 and born in New York, James , age 20, a farmer born in New York [shown as H. J. in 1860], Jerome, age 18 and "farm help", the first of the three children born in Illinois, Wesley, 11, Wilson, 9, and Frank, 16 "farm help".

DARWIN BLODGETT -- shown in the 1850 census with James Blodgett on the same farm with no apparent family, age 24, a farmer, born in New York.

He is shown in the Boone County 1860 census age 36, a farmer born in New York, with Kesiah, age 39 and born in New York, and two children, O. G., a boy, age 9, and born in New York, and George W. , age two and born in Illinois.

In the 1870 census, he is shown as Darius {sp.?], age 44, a farmer born in New York [value $1300 and $500], with Kesiah, age 48 [loks like it could be 40], "keeping house" and born in New York, and Oscar, age 17, ["farm help"] and born in New York.

NEW YORK INFO

In the history of Madison County, New York, there is an Elijah Blodgett who was the first Town Clerk of Hamiltin in 1795, and a veteran of the Revolution having served in the Vermont Militia. He had a wife, Phebe, and moved from the town in 1807. There were many other Blodgetts in Madison county, including some with "O" names -- like Orrin and Ozen -- which could make a link between Orley and Orson.

There does not appear to be a Squire Blodgett in the 1840 New York census, when he would have been of age. He was probably still living with his parents at that time, even though Phoebe had been born in 1836.

There are Rupells in six New york counties in 1840: Madison, Albany, Erie, Oneida, Rensselear, abd Westchester.
