Leading physician and prominent citizen of Thomas Co; died at his home in Thomasville. Graduated from Franklin College, now U. of Ga. and from the SC Medical College in Charleston, and later took post-grad courses in Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.
res. Wayne and Glynn Co, living on a plantation near Waynesville, which he bought, then later moved to Sherwood Plantation near the same town, where he lived with his family until forced by the dangers of the Civil War moved to Thomasville, GA.
In Jun 1863 and his wife's cousing Wm. R. Gignilliat, drove through from Wayne Co as far as Bainbridge looking for a new home. Bought 7 acres "Braswell Place" Jan 1864. Had a plantation near Morven, Brooks Co, where his slaves were taken.
Was a physician and writer of medical and scientific treatises. Trustee of the State Sanitarium; member of the AMA; Mayor of Thomasville 1874-76; Served in the Phoenix Riflemen of Savannah when young; Surgeon in Indian War 1838-9 State Militia, in Okefinoke campaign.; Mex.War surgeon in 9th US Inf. at Ft. Brooks, FL; organized the "Wayne Rangers" as Capt. during Civil War; then the "Mercer Partisans"/Co."G", 24th C.,Cal.Regt. Commanded this comppany at the time of the bombardment of Ft. McAllister early in 1863.; then assigned by the Confed. Gov. as Asst. Surgeon at Andersonville Prison in s.w.Ga.
Member of the Presby. Church, Royal Arch Mason serving as High Priest of his chapter.
