O. C. Abbott was born in Konts Porter Co. Indiana Sept. 5, 1851. A son of Edwin C. Abbott and Mary Ann Wright Abbott. He was reared on his fathers farm in Fayette Co. Iowa. He attended schools in Fayette Co. and Delaware Co. When he was twenty years of age he became interested in the mercantile business in Hopkinton, Delaware Co., Iowa. Eleven years later in 1882 he removed to Albion, Boone Co., Nebraska and established a grocery store. He resided in Albion eight years.
In 1875 Mr. Abbott had married a school teacher, Emma E. Carrnahan of Malugin Grove, Lee Co., Iowa. She was born in Lee Co., Iowa, August 12, 1852. Date of the marriage was Dec. 31, 1874.
During his residence in Albion he was City Treasure for three years. In 1886 the family moved to Glenrock, Wyo., by traveling in a covered wagon. Mr. Abbott opened a trading post in Glenrock and was Postmaster of Glenrock, he received his appointment on Feb. 9, 1887 by the Postmaster General, William F. Nilas.
In 1889 the family once again was on the move, leaving Glenrock by covered Wagon to Denver, Colo., then by train to Wilmington, California, arriving there on April 1, 1890. After six months in Wilmington the family moved to their home at Timms Point.
In 1890 Mr. Abbott established the firm of Abbott & Stacy, a real estate business along with Insurance and home construction. He was City Clerk of San Pedro (1906) and was elected a free holder to draft the city charter for San Pedro. Also, a member of the Committee for annexation of San Pedro to the City of Los Angeles. Among his other associations was a FA & M Mason having been raised in a lodge in Malugin Grove, Ill., a member of the Republican Party, Forester of America, Chamber of Commerce of San Pedro, member of the Methodist Church and Notary Public.
Emma C. Carnahan Abbott died in San Pedro, Feb. 9, 1906 and is buried at Harbor View Cemetery on 22nd & Grand Ave, San Pedro.
Mr. Abbott remarried, Mrs. Marie E. Monroe, of Kankakee, Ill. He retired to a ranch in Placerita Canyon, Newhall. They raised chickens, Fruit and vegetables. Mr. Abbott died in Los Angeles, August 8, 1921, and is buried at San Pedro Harbor Veiw Cemetery. The second Mrs. Abbott, Marie, returned to Kankakee. Date of her death is unkown. The ownership of the ranch reverted to her children upon her death.
