!p.10,Wauwatosa News-Times 9 Sept 1965: Church Secretary Mrs. Spalding Dies.
Members of a pioneer Wauwatosa family and active in church affairs here form
many years, Mrs. Harrison Spalding, 76, died on Sunday (5 Sept) in West Allis
Memorial hospital. Her home was at 8216 Milwaukee Ave. Memorial services will
be held at 3 pm next Sunday in Wauwatosa's First Congregational Church.
Mrs. Spalding, the former Grace Waner, was the granddaughter of the Rev.
Luther Clapp, who came to Wauwatosa in 1845 from Massachusetts as the 3rd
pastor of Wauwatosa Congregationalists. Her parents were Emma Clapp Watner,
the city's first historian, and Henry Watner, who started on of the city's
first ice and fuel companies and later was a realtor here. She was a member of
the Wauwatosa Pioneers, worked as administration secretary at Wauwatosa High
(now East)School, later was in the bookkeeping department of the First National
Bank in Wauwatosa, and since 1926 had held positions of trust and importance
with the First Congregational church.......Mr. Spalding died in 1926, but she
is survived by 5 daughers, Mrs Daniel H. Lamb, Mrs. Peter Van Uxem, Mrs. Helen
Lamb, Mrs. E.U. Gregersen and Mrs. Nathan Runge, and by 2 sons, David of
Milwautee and Harrison of West Allis. Buried at Wauwatosa cemetery.

from letter from Carol A. Clapp,1/9/1968Aunt Emma Watner's only daughter was
Grace (Watner) Spaulding. She, like her parents, was a wonderful Christian
woman and was loved by all of Wauwatosa. She worked as a secretary for the
Cong'l Church for many years where her Grandfather and mine was pastor for so
many years.
