'Lieutenant' Samuel Smith came from Ipswich, Suffolk County, England on the ship, "Elizabeth" , in 1634, with his wife and four children. From Wethersfield records he was designated as "fellmonger", probably a dealer in hides, tanner and trader in furs. He seems to have quickly assumed prominence in the community and held the office of deputy to the General Court in almost all of the sessions between 1641 and 1653. In 1659/60, he removed to Hadley, MA, where he held similar important offices in the church and state. The inventory of his estate was taken on January 17, 1681.
