Extracts from letter written by s.A.Ashe to Miss S.M.Swann re:John Swann and
Swann Family:
Raleight, 4 Dec.1885 Dear Cousin Sallie,
I am grateful to someone for having made the inquiry that led you to give me a
sight of your handwriting. It was a rare pleasure to hear from you.
I know nothing of Mr. John Swann except what is contained in an extract of a
letter from Mr. John Bryan to Cousin Griff McRee, and found in the 2nd volume
of THE LIFE OF IREDELL p.228. The book can be had at the Wilmington Library if
you have no copy.
Old Col. Sam Swann, whose ancestor was an alderman of Jamestown in 1611,
shortly after the settlement, lived on the South side of the James River at
Swann's Point. He came to this state along about 1690. He married twice. By
his 1st wife, he had the Cape Fear Swanns; and by his 2nd wife, who was Sarah
Drummond, the dau.of Gov. Drummond, he had a 2nd set of children, who remained
on the Albermarle.
The John Swann you speak of was descended from that branch of the family.
The Shepards of Eastern Carolina, the Bryans, and others are descendants of
that set of children. The genealogy is detailed in particular in the old law
suit, "Den(?) on the demise of Shepard", reported about the beginning of this
century.
The Shepards and Bryans, you may know, among the most respectable people in
the N.E.part of the state. James Bryan at New Bern may know something more
about Mr. John Swann, but I doubt it. My impression is that he served the the
Rev.War, but I have not looked to see. Mr. Geo.Davis may perhaps know more
about him. I will see what I can find out in addition to the facts stated by
Mr. Bryan to Mr. McRee.
Your loving Cousin, S.A.Ashe

After marriage 1673, removed to own plantation Lawne's Creek. In 1682, they
returned to Swann's Point, deeded 300 acres to his step-mother and lived there
until they removed to NC in 1676. (Lawne or Laune's Creek). Samuel was JUstice
of General Court in Albermarle Dist. of NC from 1697-1702. Sec.of State in
1700. Lord Deputy of NC Council 1707. Major Samuel was resident of Perquimans
Dist., a member of the Council, Judge of General Court, Collector of Customs
(Ashe's History of N.C.)
Col. Samuel succeeded his father at Swann's Point and was prominent for many
years in VA and NC. He sold the propery 22 Feb 1706 to Joseph John Jackman for
450 pounds of lawful money of England. (Recorded in the Clerk's office of the
Circuit Court of Surrey Co.VA) Commissioner to surpress Bacon's Rebellion at
Swann's Point. Two old brick houses were burned down many years ago.
Justice Surry Co,VA 1674, Member House of Burgesses 1677-93;Maj.of Militia
1687; moved to NC ab.1694. Collector Her Maj.Customs at Roanoke.
