Ecgberht succeeded to the West Saxon crown upon the death of King Bithrick, in the year 800 and in the course of the first twenty years of his reign, he succeeded in uniting the whole heptarchy under his rule. He was the seventeenth king of the West Saxons and the first Saxon king of all England.
