!MILITARY: Civil War - Original discharge
!From notes left by Georgia Winifred (Cole) Brace: Some records stated that
George was born in Clinton, ME, but in one place she states "near Waterville,
ME.
!Served his country in the Civil War. Enlisted 1st in the 13th Maine Infantry
and was sent to New Orleans. He was discharged for disability and afterward
joined the 3rd Maine Cavalry and was again sent to Louisiana. The largest
battle he was in was the Battle of Baton Rouge. He said there was lots of
bushwhackinging the war in Louisiana.
!When he returned to Maine after the war, he was broken in health (they thought
he had consumption) and he also had fever and ague for years after. So for the
sake of his health he decided to go West and landed in Oshkosh, WI, with just
twenty-five cents in his pocket. This he immediately spent for a good supper
and then went out and found a job and came back to the hotel and arranged to
board by the week.
!He married Alida Janette Lathrop at Seymour, WI, 1876. He became acquainted
with her at Belle Plaine, where she taught school and he worked. After their
marriage, he tried farming for a time, but did not like it, so traded the farm
for a store at Raymondsville and was quite successful there.
!He afterward sold the store to Melvin Stevens, better known as "Big Steve" who
had married his sister Elizabeth. Mr Stevens afterward moved the store to
Pella, where they lived and ran the store and Post office many years. Then
sold and moved to Clintonville, WI, where both died.
!George Cole moved to Marion, WI, after selling the store at Raymondsville where
he had a meat market, but he sold that and moved to Tigerton and there he was
interested chiefly in lumbering. Later he moved to Birnamwood, WI, where he
went into the store business again with Allen J. Hunter for a partner. They
sold out, eventually, to Roepke and Meisner and later he went into the
merchantile business again with Herman G Dreier for a partner.
!Mr Dreier was the station agent there and later went to Madison and studied
law. Mr Cole running the store.
!Mr. Cole closed the business out in Birnamwood and served as "trader" on the
Menominee Indian Reservation at Keshena. He did well there, then came back to
Birnamwood to live. END
!From IGI listing LDS Church - I found a birth record entry for George L. Cole,
parents Harrison Cole & Betsey Flanders, date of birth 16 Sep 1843, which is
different than the other information I have. This record was just an
extraction from some other records and not entered by an individual.
!Birth: Vital Records of Clinton, Me to year 1892 by Colonel Carleton Edward
Fisher. Civil War Pension.
!Death: death certificate from Wisconsin verified date of birth as 16 Sep 1843
!Divorce: Civil War Pension-- Divorced Alida J. Lathrop June 6, 1890, Shawano,
WI.
