The Upper Mill

In 1815 Jonathan Gleason sold to Barnard Blanchard "the Saw Mill and Hayseed Mill standing there on" for $400 with the right "to raise the water in said pond as high as is Necessary for the use of said Mills". On July 25, 1830, the freshet damaged this and other mills in the region. Barnard Blanchard sold the mills to William Blanchard later that year.

Blanchard

Barnard Blanchard (b. 1774 in Worcester, MA) and his wife Phebe Young came to this area around 1800 with several other family members. They soon acquired land in Braintree, Roxbury and Brookfield. Barnard and Amos Blanchard sold land to the church in West Brookfield in 1840. Since then, several branches of the Blanchard family (including Barnard Jr., Amasa, Stillman, Hosea, Sewell, DeWitt Clinton, Wallace, John, and others) have made West Brookfield their home.
Barnard and his son William Blanchard were owners of the upper saw mill at West Brookfield. William had a son in 1823 whom he also named William. William Jr's son Timothy Blanchard was a carriage maker and carpenter and, in 1878, purchased the farmin West Brookfield where Perry Blanchard now lives. Timothy and George West did carpentry work in the neighborhood for many years. After Timothy's death in 1925, his son Earl carried on the farm. He and Steve Hutchinson were avid fox hunters.
In 1912, Francis Blanchard, son of Earl, was born on the family farm which he operated until 1969 when he and his wife Axie purchased the Snowsville Store from Sanford Small. There son Perry now lives on the family farm with his children, Bruce, Chris and Tonya. Perry's brother Earl maintains a camp on Bover Road, not far from the farm.
