Josias was born on December 15th, 1667 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut.1 Josias' father was Samuel Phelps and his mother was Sarah Griswold. His paternal grandparents were William Phelps and Elizabeth Marshall; his maternal grandparents were Edward Griswold and Margaret Hicks. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Phillip, Samuel, Timothy, William, John, Ephraim, Mary Hester, Abigail and Sarah. East Granby, CT. All of William's 10 children were born in Simsbury (former
Turkey Hills, later called Granby) CT. other children: William, David, Timothy,
James, Shadrack, Mercy, Ebenezer, Andrew, Isaac.
