  John Griffin:
  Genealogies & Biographies of Ancient Windsor; Stiles:
  John had no lands at Windsor and could hardly have owned a house there. In 1648 was engaged in manufacturing tar and his candlewood, etc., being burned by an Indian who was unable to pay damages, his friends transferred to Griffin the land at Massaco (Simsbury), which he transferred to the town, and afterwards became a settler there.  Was a freeman in Simsbury in 1669.  He first appears at Windsor 13 May 1647 to marry Anna Bancroft. She was probably a sister of John Bancroft who lived near.  At the time of John Drake Sr.'s death in 1659, Griffin resided with either Henry or Francis Stiles.  On Sep 6, 1655 William Hayden makes complaint of the riotous conduct of John Griffin, John Bancroft and Jacob Drake, frightening his wife.  Griffin seems to be the chief offender, as he was the only one fined 20 pounds, however all 3 were bound over in 20 pounds each for good behavior until the next court. William Hayden's wife died 17 Jul 1655, maybe in consequence of this fright.  In 1663 John was granted by General Court 200 acres of land at Massacoe in consideration "that he was the first that perfected the art of making pitch and tar in these parts."  In 1673, with Samuel Wolcott, was ordered to command the Trainband.
