Matthew Cadwell 
Matthew was born about June 12th, 1748 in Hartford Co., CT.1 Matthew's father was Matthew Cadwell and his mother was Elizabeth Hubbard. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Cadwell and Hannah Francis; his maternal grandparents were John Hubbard and Agnes Spencer-Humphries. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Pelatiah, Theodore, John, Abijah, George, Hulda, Lois, Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Anne. He died on October 11th, 1811 in Hartford Co., CT.1 General Notes

Fought for 6 days with the Minutemen at Lexington, Massachusetts under Captain John Parker April 1775. Enlisted 27 April 1778 for the duration of the war. He was receiving Sergeant's pay in August 1778. He went to Warren, Rhode Island with Captain John P. Wylly's Company in a Battalion of forces, commanded by Samuel B. Webb. He remained at Warren until February 1779 when the troops went to Tiverton, Rhode Island. He was on duty there until October 1779, when they went to Newport for a month before going to Morristown, New Jersey to winter there. Morristown was the winter Headquarters of General George Washington. Here men endured the worst winter of the War. The men lacked food, clothing and there was prevalence of disease in camp. General Washington praised his troops for their courage and fortitude. Morristown was a well chosen Winter Quarters. It was here they stopped their retreat, which was one of the turning points of the war.
On March 20, 1780 Matthew was transferred to Captain William's Company and remained on duty here at Morristown. Matthew became ill here in the summer of 1780 and continued to be sick for 7 months. On April 5, 1781 he was listed as a casualty and transferred to the Invalids Corp. Records show Matthew was made Lieutenant of the 9th Company of Trainband in the 1st Regiment in the State of Connecticut January 1782.
