Born in England and accompanied his parents in their emigration to New England, and dwelt with them at Charlestown, Woburn, and Chelmsford. He married Mary, a daughter of William Dixon, of Cambridge, MA.

June 17, 1673, His estate was administrated and was granted to his father, Benjamin Butterfield adn his father-in-law, William Dixon on behalf of ye children of ye said Jonathan. (Mdx. Court records).
An inventory of the estate of Jonathan Butterfield was apprized by us &c. on the 15th of April, 1673.
