Barthene was born on March 23rd, 1815 in Goffstown, NH.1 Barthene's father was James Butterfield and his mother was Lydia Barnes. His paternal grandparents were John Butterfield and Naomi Stevens; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Barnes and Rachel Barratt. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Simon Houghton "Holton", Orrimel S. H. "Osh", Hannah, Lydia Abigail and Anna Sargent.
