General Lee married Mary Anne Randolph Custis, the only daughter of George Washington Parke Custis and Mary Lee Fitzhugh, his wife. Mary Custis was born at Arlington, October 1, 1808; d. at her home in Lexington, November 5, 1873. She was buried at the college chapel with her daughter, Agnes, and her husband.

Mary Anna Randolph Custis (1808–1873), the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington, at Arlington House, her parents' home just across from Washington, D.C. They eventually had seven children, three boys and four girls: George Washington Custis, William H. Fitzhugh, Robert Edward, Mary, Annie, Agnes, and Mildred.

The Lee family lived at Arlington House, which was inherited by Mary. Unfotunately, the house was seized by the Union because Mary was handicapped & unable to pay the new tax they had installed, and the home's property was turned into a burial ground (now present-day Arlington Nat'l Cemetery) for the dead soldiers.
