Note:
Letters written in 1982 by great-grandson, Charles Edwin Myers with Family History as handed down to him by his father, Matt Myers - son of Nicholas Myer.
I do not know for sure whether my grandfather's name was Alpha Nicholas Myer or whether it was just plain Nicholas Myer and all those who would know are dead. I do know for certain that young Alpha Nicholas (Uncle George Myers son) always claimed to have been named after our grandfather. I do not know if the "Alpha" was part of grandpa's name or not. In Germany their name was MYER. There was no letter "s" at the end of their name. **The story that was handed down to me was that great grandpa and great grandma wore the German name of Myer and that the letter "s" was gradually added on to the name Myer, which is more American.
My grandfather was born somewhere near Metz. Now whether Metz was German Territory or French Territory during the year of 1834, I do not know. However, History would tell, if one cared to look it up. It was a long time before it was really established which country owned and possessed the town of Metz but Germany had a law that forced all male children to take military training. Grandpa's folks slipped their children over into France and made their way to where they could board a ship heading for America when grandpa was only three years of age. He had some brothers and a sister but know one knows what became of them. The parents died aboard ship and were buried at sea. That was the custom at that time. Grandpa was put through quarrentine and held until some family would take him and raise him. It so happened that a German family took grandpa and raised him. I understand that he never heard of his living kinfolk again.
The only true history I can use is found on grandpa's original tombstone, which is now standing at the foot of grandpa' s grave. After Grandmother Myer died, a new double headstone replaced the original moss covered marble stone. The legend on both the new stone and the original stone reads about the same concerning grandpa. The original stone was set up before Grandma Myer died by at least twenty some odd years, therefore the older stone had nothing concerning grandma's history. When the older stone was moved to be replaced by the newer one, it was set, presumably at the head of the little grave containing the twin baby of William and Nancy Myers. He would have been a grandson to Grandpa Myer. His grave was unmarked, so therefore the older stone of grandpa's was put to good use.
Grandpa Myer died in our home. At the time of grandpa's death, he and grandma lived out in the country. I think they owned a little piece of ground just outside of town (South Fork-outside of West Plains, MO)
