Thomas was born on May 1st, 1742 in Carolina County, VA.1   Thomas' father was Thomas Fortson and his mother was Elizabeth Winn.  His maternal grandfather was Michael Guinney. He had a brother named William. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named John, Aquilla and Priscilla.  He died at the age of 81 on February 15th, 1824 in Elbert County, GA.1
