John Gove was born on March 5th, 1837 in Norwich, Vermont. John Gove's father was Thomas Sargent and his mother was Lydia Cook. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Sargent and Susan Bartlett. He had six brothers and six sisters, named William Henry, George Washington, Thomas, Charles Alexander, David Pratt, Solon H., Harriet S., Mary Ann, Meribah S., Betsey, Lydia M. and Ellen W..
