One story goes that Richard ran away from home and joined (or impressedint
o) the British Navy where he served for seven years.  At NewAmsterdam, le

ntry at Middletown.  1669 Overseer and constable.Illiterate.  1675 Deed
ed 1,800 acres to his heirs.  1677 Receivedadductive 745 acres by paten

STOUT FAMILY OF DELAWARE The record shows "Richard Stout was the son of J
ohn Stout, of Nottinghamshire, England. It is related of him that he le
ft home because of parental interference in an affair of love with a you
ng woman who was considered below him in the social scale. He enlist
ed on a man-of-war, where he served seven years, receiving his dischar
ge at New Amsterdam, where his vessel happened to be when his term of enli
stment expired." Legend states that his "enlistment" was of the 'PRESSE
D" variety {that is the "recruters" would go into a pub and take the you
ng men who were under the influence, and kidnap them, take them to their s
hip, put them in irons until the ship was out to sea.  Richard received h
is discharge by "JUMPING SHIP".

After JUMPING SHIP, Richard was taken in by Penelope and hid from the Brit
ish.  After the British had gone, Richard came out of hiding and eventua
ly married Penelope.
PROMINENCE: The STOUT FAMILY OF DELAWARE states that "Richard Stout was t
he most prominent of the founders of the new colony at Middletown." The re
cords show that Richard and his sons owned 780 acres.
