H. L. Lavington, 87, Resident here for 66 Years, Dies Sunday- May 30, 1948
H. L. (Link) Lavington, 87, a resident of the community for 66 years, a
nd a well known and highly respected citizen, died at his home in Shelt
on at 2 o'clock Sunday morning following a lingering illness.
Born in Liverpool, N.Y., Jan 8, 1861, Mr. Lavington had reached the a
ge of 87 years. He was a son of Charles and Elizabeth Lavington and came f
rom a family of six children.
At the age of 21 years he came to Nebraska with a brother and located in t
his community. He was engaged in farming for many years a few miles northw
est of Shelton, after which he retired and purchased a home in town whe
re the family has since lived. On Feb. 23, 1893, he was united in marria
ge to Miss Fannie Oliver and to this union three children were born. Survi
vors are hiswife, two daughter, Misses Laura and Lotta Lavington, at hom
e, and a son, William, who lives on a farm north of Gibbon, and a grandso
n, Howard. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Fannie Hayes, Hollywood, Calif
., a brother, Charles H. Lavington, St. Petersburg, Fla., and several niec
es and nephews. Two sisters and a brother preceded him in death.
"Link" as he was familiarly known in thiscommunity where he spent more th
at 66 years of his life, was a highly respected citizen and aman who was w
ell liked by everyone who knew him.
Funeral services in charge of Rev. Vincent Beebe, pastor of the Methodi
st church, wereheld at the church Tuesday at 2:30. Rev. Beebe was assist
ed by Rev. E.C. Staley, a former pastorof the church, who now lives at Mor
rill, Nebr.
For a half hour preceding the services. Mrs. Fred Schroeder, pianist, play
ed old sacred songs and the variations. During the services Rev. Staley sa
ng two hymns, "in the Sweet By and By" and "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," wi
th his daughter, Mrs. R.E. Trump, of Bayard,as accompanist.
Interment was made in the Shelton Cemetery. Casketbearers were Harry Olive
r, Alf Rowe, L.J. Hallas, Howard Widdowson, Leland Cook and Ralph Vohlan
d.
