Hugh was born in 1147 in Kevelioc, Merionethshire, Wales. Hugh's father was Ranulph De Meschines and his mother was Maud Fitzrobert. His paternal grandparents were Ranulph Le Meschin and Lucy Chester; his maternal grandparents were Robert De Caen and Maud Fitzhammon. He was an only child. He died at the age of 34 on June 30th, 1181 in Leek, Staffordshire, England.-
