Joseph was born in Braintree, Norfolk, Massachusetts, USA.1 Joseph's father was John Arnold and his mother is Hannah Arnoldx. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Arnold and Phebe Parkhurst. riedat Braintree Jun.8,1648, Rebecca Curtis, widow of Deodatus Curtis w
ho was in Braintree by 1640. Rebecca Arnold died at Braintree Aug.14,16
93 and Joseph Arnolddied at Boston "an inhabitant of Braintree many year
s, being old full of years, being at Boston visiting his son John there, w
as buried Nov.17,1701."- Diary of John Marshall.
Joseph Arnold of Braintree aged 68 or thereabouts deposed Nov.26,1690 th
at he had known Solomon Curtis since a child, etc. (Bristol Deeds 1-27) a
nd he deposed again May 10,1700 that he was 80 years old or thereabouts (M
ass. Archives 8:88).
Joseph Arnold settled in present East Braintree along Quincy Ave. near t
he crest of the hill, near the Thomas A. Watson School. His land was menti
oned in town records in 1678, when he was one "in the eastward part of Mon
atiquot" who petitioned for a highway to their estates - the road now kno
wn as Hayward St. from Commercial St. In Dec. 1674 he sold 2/3 acre or t
he Quarry on Fore River (S.D.3-214).
Proof that Rebecca Curtis was widow of Deodatus Curtis is found in Brist
ol Deeds 3-214, where John Arnold of Boston & Solomon Curtis are called br
others. (really half brothers)
