Rhys "Fychan" ap was born about 1127 in Elfaeluwchmynydd, Radnorshire, Wales.  Rhys "Fychan" ap's father was Gruffudd ap Rhys and his mother was Gwenllian II verch Gruffydd.  His paternal grandparents were Rhys ap Tewdr-Mawr and Gwladus verch Rhiwallon; his maternal grandparents were Gruffydd ap Cynan and Angharad verch Owain. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Maelgwn ap, Maredudd ap, Morgan ap, Nest verch and Gwladus ap. He had two half-brothers named Anarawd ap and Cadell ap.  He died on April 28th, 1197 in St. David's, Pebidiog, Pembroke, Wales.  He was buried in St. David's Cathedral.
