Richard was born in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, England. Richard's father was William de Croft and his mother was Margaret Walwyn. His paternal grandparents were John de Croft and Jonet verch Owain; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Walwyn of Hellens and Isabella Hathaway. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Agnes and Joan. He died on July 29th, 1509 in Croft Castle, Leominster, Herefordshire, England. He was buried in St. Michaels' Church, Croft Castle.General Notes

"1462: the Battle of Mortimer Cross was held on land belonging to the Croft family. This battle was decisive in putting the Yorkist King Edward IV (a Mortimer) on the throne. Sir Richard Croft, who fought at the battle, was a Knight for the Shire and Sheriff of the County of Hereford. In 1471 Richard Croft captured Prince Edward at the battle of Tewkesbury and was make a Knight Banneret upon the field of Stoke by Henry VI. Under Henry VII Richard was made Receiver-General of the Earldom of March and Knight Banneret at the Battle of Stoke (1487).
