Hoel, known as The Great, was born about 0491 in Cornouaille,Bretagne. The Great's father was Budic de Cornouaille II and his mother is Elaine ferch Gwrleis d'Anaumide. His paternal grandfather was Duke of Brittany Erich ap Andrew; his maternal grandfather is Gwrleis ap Sartogys and his maternal grandmother was Ygerna verch Amlawdd. He had a sister named daughter of King Budic II. He was the older of the two children. He died in 0545.¹
