Cerdic was one of the original Saxon invaders and became the first Saxon king of the area of Wessex which would become Dorset.
The Anglo Saxon chronicles state that "In 495 there came two ealdormen to Britain: Cerdic and Cynric his son, with five ships, to the place called Cerdicesora; on the same day they fought the Welsh.
In 508 they killed a British king named Natanlaod and five thosand men with him. After that the land was known as Natanleag up to Cerdicesford.
In 519, they received the West Saxon kingdom and the same year they fought with the Britons in the place now called Cerdicesford; the royal line of Wessex ruled from that day.
In 527, they fought the Britons in the place called Cerdiceslea and then in 530 they seized the Isle of Wight and killed a few men in Carisbrook.
In 534 Cerdic died and was succeded by Cynric as ruler of Wessex.
