Ruth's father was William (Jr.) Read (Reed) and her mother was Iris (Avis) Deacon. Her paternal grandparents are William Read and Lucy Heneage OR Heanage. She had four brothers and five sisters, named William, Thomas, John, James, Margaret, Hannah, Mary, Esther and Mary. She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
