Joseph was born in 1765 and his baptism took place in November 1765 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England. Joseph's father was John Osguthorpe and his mother was Betty ASHMORE. His paternal grandparents were Thomas OSGUTHORPE and Anne VAUGHAN; his maternal grandparents are Joseph ASHMORE and Mary GOODWIN. He had two brothers named William and Thomas.
