His paternal grandfather was Richard Newburgh and his paternal grandmother is Elizabeth Horsey; his maternal grandfather is John Mathews. He had five brothers and two sisters, named John, William, Fides, Robert, Robert, Alice and Dorothy. He was the third youngest of the eight children. He died in Dorchester, Mass..
