His paternal grandparents were Edward Neville and Elizabeth Dedist of Columb Beauchamp; his maternal grandfather was Hugh Fenne and his maternal grandmother is Mrs-Hugh Fennes. He had five brothers and two sisters, named John, Edward, William, Thomas, Richard, Elizabeth and Jane. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
