Mahala was born on February 4th, 1839 in Fremont, Sandusky, Oh.  Mahala's father was Phillip James Garn or Gern and her mother was Mary Magdalene Fought.  Her paternal grandparents were John Garn and Susanna Pringle; her maternal grandparents are Michael Fought and Elizabeth Kline. She had six brothers and three sisters, named Micah, Aron, Philip James, Samuel, Nathanial, Daniel, Elizabeth, Mary Magdalene and Emma.  She was the oldest of the ten children.  She died at the age of 83 on April 3rd, 1922 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Ut.  She was buried on April 6th, 1922 in City Cemetery, Salt Lake City.

‌Mahala and Daniel were married in a religious ceremony on January 12th, 1858 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Ut.1   They had four sons and three daughters, named Benjamin, Philip James, William Franklin, Jacob Moroni, Lucy, Mary Magdalene and Fanny Mahala.

‌Mahala and William Henry Jex were married in a religious ceremony in 1875.1
