HRE\King, the Great, o Martel was born in Ingolheim, Prussia, Germany.1 HRE\King, the Great, o Martel's father was King III , the Short, of the Franks Martel Pepin and his mother was II, Broadfoot, of Laon Bertrada Countess. His paternal grandparents were King, the Hammer, of the Franks Martel Charles and of Alemania Rotrude Duchess; his maternal grandparents were of Laon Charibert Count and of Laon Bertrada Countess. He had a brother and a sister, named IV, of the Franks Pepin and of the Franks Bertha. He died in Aachen, Rheinland, Prussia, Germany. He was buried in Aix la Chapelle.1 General Notes

A ofscent from Attila has been proposed by some, on the basis of (a) Charl
emagne's postulated ofscent from Austricusa, a princess of the later Gepid
ae, and (b) a claim, on the part of the Gepid kings, to ofscent from Ardar
ic, at first Attila's lieutenant, then king of the Gepidae, who supposed
ly married a daughter of Attila. (As a polygamist, he doubtless had a go
od many to throw around.) Full oftails of the royal Gepid pedigree are, ho
wever, unrecoverable, and the claim of Attilanic ofscent may be taken at f

UNDATION FOR THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE AND FINALIZED THE SPLIT BETWEEN EAST A
ND WEST, BYZANTINE AND ROMAN EMPIRES. CHARLEMAGNE RULED THROUGH A HIGHLY E
FFICIENT ADMINISTRATIVE SYSTEM. HE CODIFIED THE LAW IN HIS VARIOUS DOMINI
ONS. HIS COURT AT AACHEN, PRUSSIA WAS THE CENTER FOR AN INTELLECTUAL A
ND CULTURAL RENAISSANCE. THE END OF HIS REIGN WAS TROUBLED BY INVASI
ON BY THE NORSEMEN. IN 813, HIS SON, LOUIS I WAS CROWNED CO-EMPEROR AND S

As king of the Franks, Charlemagne conquered the Lombard kingdom in Ital
y, subdued the Saxons, annexed Bavaria to his kingdom, fought campaig
ns in Spain and Hungary, and, with the exception of the Kingdom of Asturi
as in Spain, southern Italy, and the British Isles, united in one supersta
te practically all the Christian lands of western Europe. In 800 he assum
ed the title of emperor. (He is reckoned as Charles I of the Holy Roman Em
pire, as well as Charles I of France.) Besides expanding its political pow
er, he also brought about a cultural renaissance in his empire. Although t
his imperium survived its founder by only one generation, the medieval kin
gdoms of France and Germany derived all their constitutional traditions fr
