Matthew's father was Richard Stone de Croston and his mother is Isabel Girdler. His paternal grandparents are William Stone De Twist and Elizabeth Bradley; his maternal grandparents are John Girdler and Ann Brathewayte. He had five brothers named John, Andrew, Henry, Robert and Thomas.
‌Matthew and Jane were married in a religious ceremony in 1595 in Bridgewater, Northampton, England. They had four sons and a daughter, named Matthew, William, Andrew, John and Catherine.
