Roger de was born about 1047 in Val de Pitres,Fr.1 Roger de's father was Robert I de Brus 1st Lord Brix and his mother was Gunnora (Emma) de Brittany. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William I de, Adam (Adelm) de, Allan, Robert De, Philina, Hortolina and Amicia. He was the oldest of the eight children.
