Eysteinsson King of Norway, known as The Meek, was born in Holtum,Vestfold,Norway.1 The Meek's father was Halfdansson King Of Norway (Fretr) Eystein I and his mother was Hilda Eriksdottir. His paternal grandparents were "White Legs" Olafsson King Of Norway (Whiteleg Hvitrain) Halfdan and Asa Eysteindottir; his maternal grandfather was Erik (Dag) Agnasson of Vestmare. Eystein, we are told, was succeeded by his son Halfdan the Generous and
the Stingy of Food. Halfdan gained this title by paying his men
generously in coinbut poorly in food. He died of a malady, was duly
buried in a mound beside his father Eystein, and was succeeded by his son
Gudrod. Gudrod is consideredto be a historical personage, although the
tales that are told about him areno doubt at least partly legendary.
