Howel ap was born in 1042 in Tegeingl, Flintshire, Wales.  Howel ap's father was Edwin Of Flint Lord of Flint and his mother is Iwerydd verch Gwrgan.  His maternal grandfather was Cynfyn ap Gwerystan and his maternal grandmother is Angharad Verch Maredudd. He had two brothers named Uchdrud ap and Owain 'Vradwr' ap.  He is the second oldest of the three children. He has a half-sister named Myfanwy verch.
